GEOGRAPHY

Do Imagination and Geography have any connection? Might say very limited. But then suppose if there is a question, as to ‘ How many islands does Bharat possess, what might be the answer? 2 or 3 or maybe some might say 6. In reality, the answer might hover in the ranges of more than 300. Yes you read it right, more than 300.

There are many many islands that have almost no names. If you are asked to give these islands, Names, to give them a distinct Identity, that might be interesting. But for that we will have to firstly find them, and that exactly will give you the opportunity to Study the Map of Bharat.

Geography, in earlier times, was never constrained by boundaries – of region, season, or time. Back then, you had the opportunity to dance along with the sun to decipher the time and the changing of seasons.

Ancient Indian geography went beyond handing you a piece of paper with an outlined map and asking you to understand, from a fixed position, the ever-changing nature of topographies, dialects, and cuisines along a distance. Geography back then was your field—an open playground for you to walk on barefoot—to first-hand understand the changing colours of soil, the texture of the crust, the river’s swiftness, and the effect of shifting winds on the crops.

With such appreciation for nature’s evolving landscapes, students were able to sense the changing emotional terrain across regions. This nurtured a more informed and empathetic perspective toward the environment in which one resides. The interdisciplinary nature of learning encouraged an understanding of how to live alongside nature—not separate from it.

Geography was far more than numbers or scales or counting the tops of people’s heads from a distance. It gave you the chance to evolve along the changing plains and learn.

It’s time we reimagine how we learn about the world around us—not just through maps and measurements but through mindful movement, observation, and connection. Geography, after all, is not just a subject to study but a life to walk through. And the more we walk, the more we understand—not just the land, but ourselves within it.
